Overview

EDJI Gallery is pleased to present Tidal Bulge, a solo exhibition of new works by American artist Dylan Hurwitz. This will be Hurwitz’s first solo show with the gallery.

In Tidal Bulge, Dylan Hurwitz captures the liminal spaces where connection, ritual, and desire meet. The title refers to the gravitational pull that shapes tides, a fitting metaphor for the interplay of forces—both natural and emotional—that define these works. The series draws from Hurwitz’s journeys through marshlands that lead to a hidden cruising beach—a sanctuary shaped by its remoteness and its intimacy. These landscapes, imbued with mystery, become stages for fleeting encounters and quiet communion.

The marshes, with their tangled grasses and winding pathways, serve as more than a backdrop. They mirror the fluidity of Hurwitz’s compositions, where bodies and landscapes merge, their boundaries dissolving in a shared sensuality. A curve of a shoulder echoes a dune; thick strands of hair mimic the texture of swaying reeds. Each painting pulses with the tension between observation and imagination, presence and absence.

Dylan’s process begins on-site, working en plein air to document the immediacy of these spaces. These small, gestural studies later expand in the studio, where scale and cropping push the compositions into semi-abstract works. Figures emerge as part of the landscape—fragmented yet harmonious, their forms dissolving into the textures of dunes and marshes. This fluid interplay evokes a sense of constant transformation, where bodies and environments meld in a shared rhythm.

Tidal Bulge brings us into a world that hovers between the tangible and the intangible, the intimate and the expansive. The journey through the marshes is itself a metaphor for the delicate balance between vulnerability and self-discovery, where time plays an essential role, as the tide’s ebb and flow alternately reveals and conceals the path ahead. With its soft curves, earthy tones, and flowing forms, Dylan Hurwitz captures the essence of queer connection through moments of vulnerability and tenderness. These paintings transcend specific times and places, speaking instead to the universal desire for connection, community, and the beauty of the unknown.
