Born in La Paz, Baja California Sur, northern Mexico, Gustavo Garcí—Villa graduated with honors from the University of Guadalajara with a degree in Graphic Design.
One of the most restless creative minds in Mexico. Gustavo Garcia-Villa works with costume design as well as art direction, fashion styling, illustration, and photography. After assuming the position as Creative Director of the Mexican subsidiary of L’Officiel magazine from its launch 10 years ago (concluding in 2020), Gustavo began to work on publishing a photobook in Buenos Aires which was included in several group exhibitions.
In 2018 he published a large-format fanzine dedicated to the exploration of the male body from the intimacy of instant photographs. In this work he brings together 24 images selected from a few hundred shots that he has captured over the course of more than twelve years. This project was presented with an exhibition in Mexico City, to inaugurate the AGO Projects design gallery.
García-Villa has published a couple of calendars, understanding them as a vehicle for printing photography rather than as an object of use, turning them into collectible items.
He has also collaborated with brands like Jil Sander, Zara, Calvin Klein, Ulla Johnson, Levi´s, Apple, Mark Cross, In Fiore, etc. and magazines like Vogue, Elle and Carnal from his creative services bureau GG STUDIO LTD, @gustavogarciavilla. He also has a clothing brand created from recycled materials called SUNK, whose Instagram account is fed with discarded photos from his own iPhone, @feelingsunk.
