Artist Interview /2

Meet Killion Huang

We popped by Killion Huang's new studio space in Guangzhou, China, to ask him a few questions about himself, his work, and his latest exhibition with EDJI.

In this video interview, Killion talks to us about growing up queer in a conservative family, his move to New York City to study art, and the things that helped him become the artist he is today. He also discusses the theme of his current exhibition at EDJI Gallery, titled Reflections.

Meet The Artist :

Killion Huang (b. Hangzhou, China) earned his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2022. Influenced by a diverse range of artistic lineage—from Matisse and Bonnard to Louis Fratino and Oscar Yi Hou—Killion's work draws on his life as a queer artist, navigating between his time in New York City during his studies and his current life in China. His paintings offer glimpses into the lives of individuals who formed part of his community in these two radically different environments.

Killion's practice is fueled by a commitment to making queer identities visible, especially in places like China, where queer culture largely remains in the shadows. In this exhibition, he explores themes of self-reflection through mirrors, revealing the essence behind the social masks that queer individuals often feel compelled to wear.

Relocating to a new studio earlier this year gave Killion a period of tranquil solitude, prompting reflections on how isolation can influence one’s sense of self. His latest series, Reflections, capture these introspective moments, offering glimpses of everyday life within intimate domestic spaces. Mirrors symbolise self-perception, while simmering reds highlights the muted pastel palettes of these tender scenes. Huang’s command of light and texture intensifies his portrayal of the inner self, inviting us not only to see but to feel the depth of his subjects. Through these signature stylistic choices, Reflections offers both continuity and evolution, solidifying Huang’s place in ultra-contemporary figurative painting.

Killion Huang’s work has been exhibited across the United States, Europe, and Asia, and is held in both private and public collections, including the X Museum in Beijing, China.
