artist presentation

Dylan Hurwitz’s work explores themes of community, connection, and the spaces that foster them, with a focus on queer experiences. His paintings, drawn from observation and memory, oscillate between landscape, figure, and abstraction. Since 2020, he has been making small Plein Air paintings in public spaces like Boy Beach in Provincetown, Jacob Riis Beach, and Fort Tilden in New York City, capturing the rituals and gatherings in these remote and communal environments.

Through cropped compositions, Hurwitz blurs distinctions between figures and landscapes—dunes morph into torsos, and hair blends with grass—creating a fluid interplay between form and setting. His plein air works often serve as the foundation for larger studio pieces, where shifts in scale and perspective emphasize the tension between flatness and depth while leaving narratives intriguingly open-ended.
